Okay, I now get how Webtoons can be addictive.
For the longest time, I have gone out of my way to avoid popular Korean comic app Webtoons. I had heard so many people talk about how great it was and the wonderful stories in there, but I wanted no part in it. Finally a week or so ago, I decided to download it and give it a shot. Mainly I wanted to read Batman: Wayne Family Adventures (which is excellent), but decided to branch out a little. While my list of series to read is pretty small, I had decided to start with a series that caught my eye in the horror section. Despite the genre, the picture for it was of what seemed to be this cute picture of two people with these sort of cartoonish cat heads. To say the least, it caught my eye as I wondered how this could be a horror series. It wouldn't take me long to get answers. So let's talk a little about Mike Birchall’s Everything is Fine.
Despite the appearance of our character's heads, as the description says, the story follows totally normal couple Sam and Maggie as they live their lives in a totally normal neighborhood. Things do seem that way too, though only briefly. You see Sam and Maggie interact and talk about their dog, Sam, about wanting a promotion at work, usual stuff. The whole time there are occasional moments and pauses. Things seem a little off as this sort of tension seems to be building. Suddenly as Sam is leaving for work, he tells Maggie that they “need to forget. “
At that point I could only start making assumptions as to what was happening in this series, In the end, nothing could have prepared me for how this series would become. Starting at the end of episode 1, this begin to really change. That tension grows as does a sense of uneasiness while Maggie and Sam begin to unravel the true mysteries and horrors of the world they live in. Despite the imagery, it is a story that will keep you at the edge of your seat. It is one I'm honestly afraid to say too much about as I don't wish to spoil anything.
I think a major part of what really sells Everything is Fine is the art style. Every character you run into has a cat head, though it is more accurate to say that it is a mask. Even the police officer had one that had a mustache on it. Overall the style Is rather cute. This creates an interesting contrast when compared to the super dark story line and visuals that take place periodically throughout. You get really caught up in this cute, almost slice of life feel, then suddenly you are seeing someone contemplating suicide. It can be incredibly brutal, but I think that lends to the overall feel that the characters are supposed to have that “Everything is Fine.”
Story wise, there have been a lot of twists and turns that have kept things pretty unpredictable and interesting. I can’t pretend I didn't see some things coming, but that still didn't make those moments any less shocking. You really wonder for a while what is going on in this world, and you'll probably get it wrong honestly. I’m just glad I got into the story so late. It allowed me to binge all that was out and not have to wait a week between releases while dealing with cliffhangers.
At the time of writing this, Everything is Fine has 29 episodes with the first season having been completed not even a week ago. While it is unfortunate as now I have to wait for season two, it is a good time for people new to the series to start this journey. Getting super into it, binging it didn't take long and it hooks you early on. Season two could make me change my mind on this series, that is always a possibility, but as of right now, I highly recommend this webtoon to anyone looking for a new horror story. With its unique style, fascinating story and unsettling atmosphere, it can provide anyone with a fresh take on the genre.
Moral of the story: try something new. Even if it seems like something that you would have thought would be overhyped, you might be surprised. In the end, chances are everything will be fine.
